Año Nuevo — New Year's Day

A national public holiday. Shops, banks and most restaurants are closed; the metro runs a Sunday service.

If you are here for it: the night before is Nochevieja, when Puerta del Sol fills up to eat twelve grapes on the twelve chimes of midnight. The square is ticketed and rammed — most madrileños do the grapes at home or in a bar and go out afterwards.
