Habsburg Madrid: the two-hour old-town walk
Sol to the Royal Palace through the oldest streets, with the tourist traps marked.
The walk that makes the centre make sense. Roughly 2 hours at a slow pace, 3km, all flat except one hill at the end. Free, self-guided, no booking.
Best early morning (empty, good light) or after 19:00. Each stop below has a note on what to look at and what to skip.

Puerta del Sol10 min
Kilometre zero of Spain, the bear-and-tree statue, and the clock everyone watches on New Year. Look at it, do not linger β it is a crossroads, not a destination.

The old town hall square β three buildings from three centuries, and almost always empty. One of the quietest lovely corners in the centre.

The tapas street. At 13:00 it is asleep; at 21:00 it is a wall of noise. Note the bars you want to come back to.
